Promotion’s GUIDE TO “MOTOCROSS & MOTOQUAD” RACING
Providing the necessary information on rules, regulations,
policies and procedures...
plus some helpful tips.
This guide is specifically for FZA promoted events. The
location of the specific events may have additional rules
for their facility – which will be posted on this site as
well. FZA rules are subject to change. If rules do change,
those changes will be updated on this site – or announced at
the event.
- This guide is a continued “work-in-progress” - -
Please contact us if you have any further questions, or need
verification.
The Basics
Welcome to the rush…the sport of motocross & quad racing!
The following information will help you to get started in
these exciting sports. First and foremost – focus on the fun
of the sport! Your skill will improve with time, practice
and race experience… don’t stress – again – focus on the fun
of it!
RISKS OF THIS SPORT
Reality
check: motocross sports is dangerous. There is a high-risk
of serious injury. Riders should not participate in events
or ride unless they have adequate medical insurance. It’s
usually not “if”, but “when” an accident will happen.
Riders; and parents or guardians of minor riders, are solely
responsible for insurance.
Ride at your own risk!
FZA will not be held responsible or liable for any injury.
Fantom Z Promotions (FZA will not be held responsible or
liable for any damage to your ATV.

HELPFUL PREPARATION TIPS and Rules
What to bring for both the practices and races:
-
Helmet - DOT/Snell approved, chest protector, knee and
elbow pads
-
Riding pants,
long-sleeved jersey, gloves and boots, anti-fog goggles
-
First-aid kit
-
Snacks, water or sport drinks - low sugar (sugar may
cause "arm pump" cramps)
-
Tools, air pump, extra spark plugs, and plug wrench,
extra air and oil filters
-
Oil, WD40, carb cleaner, gas can, duct-electrical tape,
zip-ties, and shop rags
-
Be prepared. Verify the
practice and races times – and arrive early.
Pitting during MX races:
If you have to pit for example leaving the track for minor
repairs, you must leave slowly and not be a danger to
anyone. You must return to the track at the same place
you exited and re-enter the track not to impede other
racers on the track. You may not re-enter the track after
the last rider has crossed the finish line.
WHERE, WHEN AND HOW
Registration Sign-up:
Riders are required to sign-in for practice sessions and
again on race day. Sign up for the appropriate class for the
appropriate skill level.
Do not hesitate to ask any questions re: classes, rules,
schedules, procedures and pit location.
You will receive a rider information form and a release form
to sign. You will pay for your practice on the day of
practice – and pay for your race on the day of the race. If
you are not racing, a spectator fee will be charged for each
extra person. Fill out and sign each form for each of your
minor riders – as well as for yourself – if you are racing.
Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied and
registered by a parent/guardian or another adult with a
signed authorizing permission statement.
PREPARATION IN YOUR PITS
·
Locate your pit space – unload and set up your area
·
Check all fluids and gas up your bike
·
Walk the track – familiarize yourself with the location of
the size of jumps, whoops and layout of the track.
The practice order should be board-posted on the line or
near sign-ups. It is your responsibility to pay attention to
when your class is up. Remember – the practice is not the
race – use this time to learn the track.
RACE
DAY
Verify
the practice times available prior to the race day start
time.
The race order will be posted
There will be a rider’s meeting announced – and held prior
to the races starting.
The race official will reiterate some rules and specify any
changes and answer any questions or concerns.
Reminder:
It is the rider’s responsibility to be staged early to be
ready for the race. They will rarely notify you – and rarely
delay the heats. Heats go very quickly.
Rules and Regulations
Fantom Z Promotions Updated Rules for 2008
Important Notice:
Starting in the Fall of 2008 Fantom
Z Promotions is updating
the MXPacific & Northwest Quads National rules to include
that any racer 16 and older that rides in other series for
money must ride in the Pro or ProAm class for the MXPacific
or NWQN series. If we determine that any rider has raced
for money in another series and do not follow these rules,
they will be disqualified from the race and will lose all
series points.
Fantom Z Promotions Event Rules:
Disclaimer:
Fantom Z Promotions reserves the right to add to and amend
these rules as we see fit, in order to run the most fair
race organization possible.
Overall Rules:
·
New staging process will be put in place at all series
events.
·
You may pit at your camp but travel to and from in 1st
gear slow exit and enter the track at the starting area.
Verify with Gate Manager that you are pitting and
acknowledge your return in order to be brought back onto the
track. Do not Go back on the track without acknowledging
your entry with Gate Manager. If you enter the track without
this, you will be disqualified from the race. No Exceptions.
·
No spectators on the track for races over 90cc. Unless
granted by event staff
·
Alcohol consumption during the event is prohibited. The
event ends after the track is declared closed. Alcohol
consumption may be consumed only if allowed by the track and
only in moderation at your camp. Any violation can and or
will result in disqualification of your rider.
·
Illegal drugs or misuse of legal drugs will not be tolerated
at any time.
·
If you are involved in any violence or physical
confrontation, you will be banned from the NWQN until
reviewed.
·
If you are quarrel with any of the officials you will first
be warned, if you continue you will be removed from the
event and your rider will be disqualified.
·
if a parent can't control themselves you may be able to drop
your rider off, and pick them up after the event, of course
you are and will be responsible for them whether you are
there or not.
·
No rider is allowed to PRACTICE/RIDE/RACE on the track
unless they have paid the entry fee and signed a legal
release before entering the track. NO EXCEPTIONS. YOU WILL
BE ASKED TO LEAVE.
·
Each rider is only allowed to practice for classes they are
signed up for. (i.e. 1 ticket 1 practice, 2 tickets 2
practices, etc..) If it is reported to a
FZA official
that you are taking extra practices, you will be required to
start backwards, in each class you are signed up in.
·
Parents of riders under 16 years old will not be allowed to
scream at, slap, hit or swear at their rider in view of the
public. PERIOD. If this is reported to or seen by a FZA
official you will be given one warning before you will be
asked to leave the facility with no refund.
·
Any rider that is caught riding in an overly aggressive
manner that could endanger another rider or spectator will
be given one warning. If a second infraction occurs, you
will be disqualified for that moto. If a third infraction
occurs you will be asked to leave the facility with no
refund.
·
Riders must receive no assistance from anyone during a race,
unless it is for safety reasons. Any other situation for
helping a rider will result in a DNF for that moto, with
the exception of the 50cc classes.
·
The following actions will not be tolerated: crossing the
track in front of a rider, running on the track during a
race, or spectating in a manner that will endanger ones self
or riders that are racing.
·
Riders must enter the correct skill level class in order to
be fair and for the safety of the other riders. If riders
are racing in the upper 50% when racing with a higher class,
FZA will determine if it is necessary to bump said rider to
the next class. If a bump up is determined that said rider
will be allowed to take 50% of their accumulated points to
the higher class. On the other hand if a rider is racing in
a class for which their skills are not adequate, they will
be judged by their peers and FZA officials will determine if
such rider needs to be bumped backwards.
·
Riders are allowed to ride another bike or quad of the same
engine size if they have non-repairable mechanical problems
with the bike or quad they started the day on. The riders
competence on the different machine falls solely on the
rider and, or the legal guardian. This bike or quad change
must be reported to sign up before entering the track.
·
Fantom Z Promotions event classes are based on skill level
and not age.
·
Parents will be required and trusted to place their riders
in the proper skill level class.
·
Any problems arising during an event, not specifically
addressed in these above paragraphs will be judged by the
Fantom Z Promotions staff of either the MXPACIFIC or NWQN
events, with a fair and common sense response.
·
Penalties for infractions at each race event will be
determined on circumstances, riding skill level and
severity. The referee and official’s decisions will be
final. We reserve the right to amend these rules and enforce
consequences, as we deem necessary in the best interest of
all riders involved.
Quads Rules:
·
Racers in the Youth 15 and Under class can race on a 450cc
or higher quad. However, if FZA staff feel that the rider
does not have the ability to manage a bike at that size,
NWQN has the right not to allow the rider to race on that
big of bike.
·
SHIFTER class is changing to 0-83cc and 85cc -125cc
(2-strokes)/150cc (4-strokes) A | B | C and OPEN
·
No one under the age of 16 can race Pro-Am or Pro.
·
New Adult 200cc to 400cc class will be created.
·
D CLASS is a beginner class and will not trophy. Riders may
only ride twice then must move to the C CLASS as with all
move ups may bring ½ points with you.
·
XP (X Country) Pits will be designated during Riders
meeting. Please attend Riders meeting in order to know
where your Pit Crew will need to go.
·
UTV RACES will race with each type of vehicle i.e. rhinos
together, or in such a manor that the riders will be able to
race as safely as possible.
BIKE RULES:
·
All aspects of the motorcycle must be in good (or better)
working order. It is the riders responsibility, the parents
if the rider is under 18 years old, to make sure the
motorcycle that is being ridden at an event is completely
safe to race. It is not the responsibility of the race
officials to check any bikes race worthiness. The race
officials do have the right and will stop a rider(s) before
or during an event if they believe a bike is unsafe to be
ridden. The motorcycle displacement is determined by the
class the rider intends to compete in. Riders are not
allowed to race a bike in a size class with a motor larger
than the size designated by the name of the class with the
exception of the 250 fourstroke which will be allowed to
compete in the 125cc and 250cc class at the rider’s own
discretion.
·
We will invoke the BRANDON LAYTON RULE if we determine an
extremely skilled 85cc or 100cc racer can safely compete in
the 250cc class or Unlimited class. (JR. and above) The
parents of the rider must determine if they want to take the
responsibility of putting their son/daughter in the big bike
class, they must submit a written request prior to sign-up
to FZA officials.
·
EXHIBITION:
A rider may ride exhibition in a higher class then they
normally ride. They must pay the required fees, they must
notify the starter and all riders of that class they are
riding exhibition , if a majority plus one rider of that
class don’t want an exhibition rider they have to voice that
prior to staging that moto race. ie an (a)rider wanting to
ride pro as an exhibition. He will have to be a pro/am rider
to exhibition pro.
Note a rider may not ride exhibition more then one class
above there last signed up class they road, ie a (b) rider
may only sign up for an (a) exhibition ride.
The rider will be awarded no points nor receive a placement
for an exhibition ride, nor will it effect your class
standing, if any other rider attempts to have a rider
disqualified
At NWQN or any other event by inferring that riding was
moving class’s when in fact it was an exhibition ride that
complaining rider will be disqualified from future events

SAFETY RULES
Important safety rules on the track:
·
Hold your line on the track (don’t “zigzag” – so the faster
riders can pass you safely)
·
Watch the experienced riders to see which lines on the track
that they favor.
·
If you happen to crash and fall off of your bike – and you
are not hurt, get yourself and your bike over to the side of
the track as soon as possible.
·
If you happen to crash – and are unable to move – track
personnel and the EMT’s will come to your assistance. Allow
them to tell you when and if to move – after they have
verified that you are okay.
·
Pay attention to the flaggers and flags – especially to the
flag that is being waved when you pass. Make sure you
understand what the different color flags mean:
REGULATIONS
Scoring:
For a race to count towards the required number for series
overall awards, the rider must sign up for the race and ride
it. If the riders is injured – or has a mechanical problem
in the qualifier race – they can still race the main. Riders
do not have to race the qualifier to race the main.
Finishes:
To receive series points, the rider must at least start the
main. If the rider is unable to complete the main, they will
receive last place points.
Switching bikes:
If the rider has mechanical problems, they are allowed to
switch to another bike for the next heat. It can only be
substituted with a bike of the same size, performance and
quality – or less; but, not greater. It is required to
notify the race officials. The numbers on the new bike must
be changed to match the original bike.
Switching riders:
Switching riders is prohibited.
FANTOM Z Promotions PLACEMENT POLICY
Our goal
in the Beginner Classes is to provide entry level riders a
fair opportunity to start out racing in a class that gives
them an equal chance to finish well against riders with the
same amount of experience.
We understand that some riders are going to improve much
faster than others; either through a natural aptitude or
experience. Realistically; as beginners, riders should not
expect to automatically finish in the top of their class. No
matter what - - from beginner to pro -
practice…practice…practice!
For overall safety for the rider and competitors – and
fairness to all, it is the responsibility of the parent or
guardian of the minor to sign up their minor rider – as well
as themselves - in the appropriate class for the specific
age, skill level, bike size, and any bike modifications.
Suggested Guidelines:
A suggested quad size guideline to follow would be: when
standing, the feet of the rider must be flat on the pegs –
there must be room for your fist to fit on its side between
the seat and the rider’s crotch.
A suggested bike size guideline to follow would be: when
standing, one foot of the rider must be flat on the ground.
Each rider’s bike will be inspected at staging to insure
that all guidelines are being followed.
Fantom Z reserves the right to place any rider in the
appropriate class bracket that best suits their ability. We
will not allow “sandbagging”, e.g.:
To downplay or misrepresent one’s ability in a game or
activity, in order to deliberately deceive a competitor.
Protest:
If a concern or complaint arises during an event - such as:
the bike in the wrong class, or class changes, that issue
will have to be resolved after the event, prior to the next
event. However, if the issue is raised either at practice or
prior to sign-up times on race-day, a solution may be
possible.
FANTOM Z ATV’s ADVANCEMENT POLICY
To make
the series fair and just for everyone, if you or your
minor’s skill ability has exceeded the present class; or, if
you or your minor repeatedly takes first place in that
specific class; or, if they have finished well at another
racetrack or series in that class; Fantom Z Promotions
reserves the right to advance that rider. If there is not a
class for a specific advance, a new class will be created if
there are at least three riders that qualify. The only class
that you will not be a required move-up in is the Pro Class.
Note:
If data is falsified, i.e., name, age, or anything that
would intentionally affect the outcome of a race or series,
that rider will be disqualified.

The announcement booth will have your award – if your placement receives one.
HELPFUL TIPS
and RULES
Learn to service your own air filter. This and being consistent with your premix are the two most important things you can do to keep your bike running trouble free.Loosen your front brake and clutch lever mounts enough that you can hit them with your hand to pivot them on the handlebars but tighten them enough they will not move around while you are riding. This can help keep the brackets from breaking if you fall.
If you bend a lever take it off and put it on a hard flat service and tap it with a hammer to straighten it. Replace it with a new one as soon as you can and keep the other one as a spare.
Do not fill your gas tank completely up. A full tank will last 35-45 minutes of riding. Running a third of a tank should be enough for a 12-15 minute race and will save as much as 10 pounds of extra weight. Experiment when you are out practicing and mark a level to fill to for racing.
Tire pressure can make a big difference in how your bike will hook up. Talk to other riders to see what they are running for each track, different track conditions, and tire compounds.
If it is muddy spray WD 40, silicone spray, or Pam cooking spray on your plastic and riding gear. This will help the mud fall off and make clean up easier. DO NOT spray on your seat or gas tank. You will slide all over and will not be able to grip the gas tank with your legs like you should.
